“I can’t teach anything that I haven’t done myself. I may not always do it, you know we don’t always do what we should (life would be very dull if we did). But I know when I want to have more freedom, I know what I can do and what I must do, then I make the choice of whether or not to do it.” - Marjorie Barstow
About
Ian (He/They)
"You might be wondering… who would be wild enough to create a website like this? Well, that would be me! Let me introduce myself:"
Ian Gunnarschja (He/They) is a master’s student at the University of Colorado Boulder, studying saxophone performance and pedagogy under Dr. Nathan Mertens.
Passionate about both teaching and performing, Ian is dedicated to exploring innovative ways to support neurodiverse musicians. Through research in Body Mapping, the Alexander Technique, and purposeful movement in performance, Ian strives to create an inclusive and effective learning environment for all musicians.
After a lifetime of struggling to connect with performance and music, Ian's recent AuDHD (Attention Deficit Disorder/Autism Spectrum Disorder) diagnosis opened new doors for exploring tools and strategies that support musicians, teachers, and listeners alike to create intentional, accessible musical experiences that benefit both the mind and body.
Beyond music, Ian enjoys 3D printing, drawing, Dungeons & Dragons, and collecting sensory tools—because who doesn’t love a good fidget?
